What Is Lipedema and Could You Have It?

I have to share something I've been sitting with for a while now... Something that suddenly made 30 years of confusion, frustration, and self-blame make complete sense.

I was recently diagnosed with Lipedema. And I am still processing what that means.

My Story with Lipedema

For three decades I competed at an elite level. I trained harder than most people around me. I dieted aggressively to stay lean year round. I did everything right by every standard I had ever been taught. And my legs never responded the way the rest of my body did.

I always knew something was wrong. No matter how hard I dieted or trained, I'd have significant inflammation in my legs, unexplained bruising, water retention, and a heavy painful feeling that required me to wear compression stockings constantly. My upper body would respond to training and nutrition. My legs wouldn't. And it affected me on stage. It affected me in my daily life. It affected how I saw myself for three decades.

I hated my legs for years. Now I finally understand why they always felt different. And it had nothing to do with effort, discipline, or willpower.

What Is Lipedema?

Lipedema is a chronic adipose and connective tissue disorder that causes abnormal fat accumulation, most commonly in the legs and hips. It is a metabolic disease characterized by significant inflammation, pain, heaviness, and abnormal fat distribution that does not respond to diet or exercise the way typical body fat does. Even after building muscle and losing fat, the lipedema fat remains. It is a condition, not a lifestyle issue.

For a comprehensive, medically reviewed explanation of Lipedema, the following resource is one of the most thorough available:

The Myths That Need to Be Addressed

The biggest myth surrounding Lipedema is that it only happens to women who are overweight. I am a living, competing example of how completely false that is. You can have lean muscle, eat well, train consistently, and still have Lipedema. Smaller women have it. Elite athletes have it. Competitors have it. It can happen to anyone regardless of shape or size because it is a chronic metabolic disease, not a reflection of someone's habits or effort.

The other myth is that serious athletes and competitors don't get Lipedema. I competed for over thirty years without knowing I had it. The condition doesn't care about your training history or your trophy shelf.

Lipedema is also significantly underdiagnosed, particularly in the United States and Canada where it is not yet widely recognized or covered by insurance as a medical condition. Europe is considerably more advanced in its recognition and treatment. There is currently a significant push to have it formally recognized and covered, and that conversation needs to get louder.

A Note to the Woman Reading This

If any of this sounds familiar, the heavy legs, the unexplained bruising, the inflammation that won't respond no matter what you do, please do your research and speak with someone who takes it seriously.

And if you've spent years blaming yourself for a body that wouldn't cooperate, I want you to know that I understand that experience more personally than most coaches ever will.

I've competed with this condition. I've built a physique I'm proud of despite it. And I've learned how to work with my body instead of constantly fighting against it in ways that changed everything about how I now coach women.

If you want to work with someone who has genuinely been in your shoes and built a coaching approach around that experience, I'd love to connect.
