Fasting Helped Me Rebuild My Body

The Secret Weapon After Menopause

I’ve done it all — calorie counting, meal prepping, fasted cardio, and more. But once I hit perimenopause and eventually menopause…

nothing worked.
Not like it used to.

My brain was always groggy. I couldn't think straight. My body felt inflamed. I was bloated constantly. The same workouts didn’t hit the same. I was gaining body fat even though I was eating 1200 calories, doing excessive cardio, and lifting heavy.

So I did what I’ve always done: I researched the hell out of it.

Not just for fat loss… but for hormonal balance, clearer thinking, and finally feel like ME again.

First, Let’s Be Clear: Fasting Isn’t Starving Yourself.

Most women over 40 are already accidentally under-eating, skipping meals out of stress or because they were always told to “eat less, move more.”

That’s not fasting. That’s starvation mode.

When fasting is done strategically, — you're giving your body time to reset its hormone signals, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce inflammation, without tanking your metabolism.

🧠 Dr. Mindy Pelz, author of Fast Like a Girl, says:

“Timed fasting allows your body to heal and stabilize hormones like insulin, cortisol, and estrogen—especially during the transition into menopause.”

Fasting Works Differently After 40

When estrogen declines during perimenopause and menopause, it affects:

  • Insulin resistance (your body becomes less efficient at using carbs for energy)

  • Cortisol sensitivity (more stress = more belly fat)

  • Growth hormone (slower muscle repair and fat loss)

Fasting helps reset all of that. Here’s how:

  • Improves insulin sensitivity (so your body stores less fat)

  • Triggers autophagy (a cellular cleanup process that keeps you younger)

  • Lowers chronic inflammation

  • Supports growth hormone production, which declines with age

🩺 Dr. Mary Claire Haver, founder of The Galveston Diet, also advocates for fasting combined with resistance training as a tool for midlife fat loss and hormone health.

What Didn’t Work for Me Anymore

❌ Eating under 1200 calories
❌ Early morning HIIT on an empty stomach
❌ Restricting carbs all day
❌ No recovery, all hustle

That left me wired, tired, and puffy. My digestion suffered. My sleep sucked. My progress stalled.

What I Did Instead (and Still Do)

I adopted intermittent fasting in a way that supports my training and hormones — not fights against them.

Here’s what that looked like:

  • I started with a 16:8 schedule (fasting for 16 hours, eating in a 8-hour window)

  • I prioritize protein and whole foods during my eating window

  • I break my fast with high-protein, low-sugar meals to stay lean and strong

The Results Were Wild 🤯

3 phases of my midlife body

🔥 Less bloat
🔥 Visible muscle definition
🔥 Clearer skin
🔥 Better digestion
🔥 Fewer cravings
🔥 More confidence in my body again!

This wasn’t a quick fix. It was a shift in how I treat my body now that I’m in this new season of life.

But Let’s Be Clear… Fasting Alone Isn’t the Fix

If you’re still:

  • Under-eating

  • Not lifting weights

  • Doing random workouts

  • Ignoring your gut health

…fasting won’t solve it.

Fasting is a tool. Not a magic pill.

You still need to:

✅ Strength train 4-5x per week
✅ Eat enough protein
✅ Sleep and recover properly
✅ Cut back on the cardio

You don’t need to fear food.
You don’t need to starve yourself.
And your body is not broken.

If you’re in the same place I was — tired, inflamed, confused — just know:
You’re not crazy. You’re just under-supported.

If you're going to fast, you need to do it right—especially after 40.

Too many women are unknowingly breaking their fast with the wrong foods or habits that spike cortisol, stall fat loss, or mess with hormones.

I created a simple, free resource inside my app to help you get the most out of your fasting routine.
